Keewatin Wastewater Treatment Plant - Wastewater Permit

We invite you to comment on the draft wastewater permit for the city of Keewatin's wastewater treatment plant.

The city is applying for a permit renewal. The wastewater treatment plant releases treated wastewater into Welcome Creek.

The proposed permit includes a new phosphorus limit of 1.0 mg/L to match the state limit. The City of Keewatin is proposing to convey all wastewater from the Keewatin wastewater treatment plant to the Nashwauk wastewater treatment plant.

Water quality permits - or National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits - establish specific limits and requirements to protect Minnesota's surface and groundwater quality. Permits are regularly reviewed and updated as they expire, allowing the MPCA to incorporate new information about the impacts of pollutants on the environment in future permits. Permits are enforced through a combination of self-reporting and compliance monitoring.
